David Hawker with his first loss in professional MMA match.

Athlete David Hawker from the gym IMMARTIAL – Athlete Centre was part of the Mixed Martial Arts competition Bushido #88 in Bulgaria on Saturday, April 22nd. He went up against the Frenchman Noah Gugnon and unfortunately got his first loss on his record.

Hawker was part of the previous competition held by Bushido last year in Brussels. He won in Brussels which led to the second invite to Bulgaria. There was not much known online about Hawkers’ opponent. What was know is that he is an all-round fighter which meant that the fight could have gone either way.

During the fight

The IMMARTIAL athlete was focused and initiated the fight, but Gugnon was not intimidated and also remained focused. Both athletes threw kicks and blocked them, but it was Gugnon that would land a hard elbow. That elbow would throw Hawker off his balance and lead him to fall. Gugnon would then use the technique “Ground and Pound” on Hawker. This ultimately led to the referee calling the fight and Gugnon taking the win.

Post fight interview

This certainly is a devastating outcome for Hawker. He would spend many hours training to prepare for the fight that would Ultimately be short-lived. During the post-interview he mentioned that before flying he had an incident that occurred during a training. That Injury would end up affecting him more than he expected. As a result, the punches thrown by Gugnon landed harder than expected. Nonetheless, his opponent was good and if given the opportunity to return, he would take that chance.

One of Hawker’s coaches and owner of IMMARTIAL – Athlete Centre, Gideon Jonker also spoke during the post-interview. He said that at IMMARTIAL Athlete Centre “We prioritize the health of our athletes”. Another coach added that “We will retrace our steps to see where there is room for improvement”.

David Hawker is the only active MMA fighter in Curacao at the Pro level. It is therefore hard to match opponents locally with the Athlete.
